For over three decades, Women Build has been breaking bias to empower women in creating a gender-equal world that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive.
Women—particularly women of color—face disproportionate access to opportunity, which can affect their ability to find a decent place to live. Housing affordability is a crucial women’s issue.
Why Women Build Matters
Women are disadvantaged in the housing market. Stigma, economic inequities and structural racism often prevent women from obtaining safe, decent and affordable housing.
A Habitat home provides the stability mothers and their families need to succeed. After purchasing an affordable home through Habitat KC, women build strength, stability and self-reliance for themselves and their families.
- Nearly 80% of Habitat KC homeowners are single mothers.
- Women earned an average of 17% less than men in 2022.
- Single women are denied mortgages at higher rates than single men despite the fact women are more reliable at paying back mortgages.
