BOARD OF DIRECTORS
A WELCOME FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
I am so excited to be part of the newly merged Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City affiliate as the organization launches its combined resources to make a bigger impact in the community with affordable housing solutions. While I am new to this affiliate, I am not a stranger to the Habitat organization having spent the past six years as the President/CEO of Truman Heritage Habitat for Humanity and, prior to that, an additional six years as a Board member. It has been an exciting and informative journey the past four weeks getting to know the staff and the community.
Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City has a greater opportunity now of growing its Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) model which encompasses the four housing facets of new construction, rehab construction, home preservation, and weatherization services. In taking a holistic look at our community—in order to assess the housing stock and the needs of the neighborhoods--our NR model truly compliments the needs of our stakeholders. Our recent Rock the Block initiative that empowered more than 450 volunteers in the Boston Heights and Mount Hope neighborhood to improve 13 homes on one block, is a perfect example of the resources Habitat for Humanity can leverage to build sustainable communities.
Habitat for Humanity’s vision is a world where everyone has a decent place to live. It is my sincere hope and desire that, as I start my new journey with this affiliate, you will join me on this exciting path as we work together to provide safe, decent and affordable housing solutions. Together, we are providing opportunities for low to moderate income families to break the cycle of sub-standard housing for their children so they can lead thriving lives.
A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City is an affiliate of Habitat For Humanity International (HFHI) which is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. HFHI provides technical assistance but each affiliate operates independently raising its own funds, finding its own sites and selecting its own families. Each affiliate tithes to HFHI to assist in building efforts worldwide.
Home ownership represents the essence of the American Dream. It also represents the single largest investment most people make in their lifetime.
Yet for too many people the American Dream is just that; a dream they will never realize because they do not qualify for a conventional loan to purchase a home.
Habitat for Humanity believes that to break the cycle of poverty, low-medium income families need their income spent on housing to serve two purposes: provide a decent, affordable place to raise a family and build wealth through home ownership.
Although a Christian based organization, our policy does not require families or volunteers to convert or adhere to a particular religion in order to receive our assistance or participate in our mission. Please see our Non-Proselytizing Policy for more details.
