Complete Counseling and Education
Step 2
Once accepted into our program, you will begin one-on-one homeownership counseling and our pre-purchase education. In this phase, you’ll build savings, reduce debt and work toward mortgage readiness.
Get Pre-Approved for a Mortgage
Step 3
After completing counseling, you will be ready to get pre-approved for a mortgage to purchase your new home. This might mean buying a home built or renovated by Habitat KC, or buying a home on the open market. Either way, we’ll be there every step of the way.
If you choose to purchase on the open market, we will work to pair you with a trusted lender and real estate agent who will help you find a home you love.
Habitat KC partners with families to build high-quality, sustainable homes using construction standards that focus on water and energy efficiency, safety and health, and materials conservation.

We are here to help you improve your financial health.
As part of your housing counseling goals, you will be required to work towards achieving a credit score of 640 or above, demonstrate sufficient and stable income to purchase a home based on the current housing market, and have adequate savings to cover expenses related to a home purchase.
Please note: If you are currently participating in a debt management program, we advise you to wait until you complete the program before applying for Habitat KC’s homeownership counseling, as your credit score, history and debt will impact your ability to qualify for a mortgage.
You must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident to be eligible for our program.
Once you become mortgage ready and are prequalified, your counselor will help you navigate the process of purchasing a home where you want to live based on what you can afford.
