How a United Community Transformed a Neighborhood
The Wendell Phillips neighborhood faced significant challenges due to historical segregation and disinvestment.
In response, Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City launched revitalization efforts in 2019. Over four years, 4,227 volunteers donated nearly 150,000 hours to building new homes and assisting existing homeowners with critical repairs. These efforts not only provided essential housing but also fostered community pride.
Today, we’ve demonstrated what is possible when we build together: 20 homes built, 85 lives impacted, and a lasting legacy in Wendell Phillips.

Together We Build
Building for the community, with the community in Wendell Phillips.

Tony

Opportunity
For Tony, affordable homeownership unlocked more than financial relief — it offered the opportunity for independence and autonomy.
For years, as rent prices climbed, Tony was forced to live in apartments that did not accommodate his motorized wheelchair, which he used to move around his home.
With Habitat KC, Tony had the opportunity to build an accessible home to support his unique needs and has, in the process, created a space that is so much more than an affordable place to live.
“Having a home that is accessible means the world to me because it means that I can live the life that I want and be independent. I’m able to cook more easily and get around my home freely. Without the accessibility that was provided, my only alternative would be assisted living or a nursing home. I am forever blessed and thankful for Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City.”
Equity
Homeowners like Rosa and Regina once believed owning a home was out of reach, but they never stopped dreaming of a safe, stable home for their families.
Rosa previously shared a cramped, two-bedroom rental with six family members. Even as the home constantly needed repairs, her rent kept rising and eviction always felt one step away. Rosa had all but given up on owning a home until a chance encounter at a Habitat KC info session changed everything. She applied, was accepted, and began building a future she thought she’d never have.
Regina dreamed of owning a home for as long as she could remember. But with low credit and limited income, she didn’t yet qualify for Habitat KC’s program. Still, she held on to her faith and kept working toward her goal. On her third application, she was accepted. With Habitat KC’s support, she raised her credit, qualified for an affordable mortgage, and built a home.
Both women closed on their homes in November 2021—part of a powerful shift in Wendell Phillips, where 16 of the 20 newly constructed homes are owned by women. Their journeys prove that when we remove barriers and expand access, we build a more equitable Kansas City.

Muhizi
Wendell Phillips Homeowner
Legacy
For Muhizi, owning a home wasn’t just about stability; it was a legacy for his children and the first chapter of lasting change.
In 2015, Muhizi fled violence in Congo, determined to give his wife and ten children a better future. After resettling in overcrowded, high-rent housing, he knew they needed something more—a place to truly call home.
In 2018, he found Habitat KC’s affordable homeownership program and committed to making that dream a reality. By 2022, he held the keys to a home of his own.
Now, Muhizi’s family has the space to grow, a foundation to thrive, and a brighter future filled with possibilities. Because when families like Muhizi’s achieve homeownership, they build a new legacy that will last for generations.
Unity
At Habitat KC, we build together, side by side, transforming neighborhoods and uniting communities.
By partnering with residents, neighborhood partners, and volunteers, every project is guided by the community and the people who call it home. Together, we revitalize blocks, strengthen local pride, and build vibrant spaces where every family can thrive.
This collaborative effort goes beyond construction; it transforms neighborhoods into welcoming homes filled with opportunity and connection, planting seeds for lasting change and a brighter future for everyone.
When we build together, revitalization doesn’t always look the same, but the goal always is: to build a stronger, more connected Kansas City.
