Frequently Asked Questions About Volunteering

Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter for families in the Kansas City community. Through our Affordable Housing Program, H.O.P.E financial coaching and Home Preservation Program, we help hundreds of families every year achieve the dream of homeownership.

Community Service Policy

  • Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City welcomes community service volunteers from civic groups, schools, community assistance programs, and those fulfilling court-ordered community service hours. It is the community service volunteer’s responsibility to maintain an accurate timesheet and to ensure that timesheets are signed at the beginning and end of each service day by a Habitat KC staff member. Hours worked but not recorded or approved with signatures during the day of service will not be counted.
  • For appropriate placement within our organization, Habitat KC reserves the right to know the offense related to court-ordered community service. Habitat KC can accommodate some court-ordered community restitution requirements. However, we cannot accept volunteers who have committed violent crimes, crimes against minors, sexual offenses, theft or robbery. In all other respects, court-ordered community service volunteers will be treated and held accountable to the same standards as all other volunteers.

Habitat KC will make all reasonable efforts to provide accommodations for our volunteers. Please contact volunteer@habitatkc.org to discuss how we can help you.

If you can no longer attend your shift, please login to our volunteer software, go to My Participation, and click the trash icon to cancel your participation.

Your comfort and safety are of the utmost importance to us. We will never ask you to do anything you are not comfortable doing; just let your site supervisor know.

Yes! We encourage you to take your own pictures. If you would like to share them with us, you can email them to volunteer@habitatkc.org or tag us on social media @habitatkc.

We have found that volunteers get the most out of their volunteering experience if they stay for the full scheduled experience. Therefore, we do not allow volunteers to come out for partial shifts. Construction shifts are the full day; ReStore shifts are three hours.
