Regina

A lot of people in my situation would have given up, I tried so many times to become a homeowner, but I had faith that it would happen for me.

Regina has dreamed of becoming a homeowner for as long as she can remember, but she has never been financially able to qualify for homeownership. So, in 2017, after learning about Habitat KC’s affordable homeownership program, she applied twice but did not meet the qualifications to be accepted at the time. But she didn’t let that stop her.

“If you get knocked down, you get back up.”

Inspired by her faith, she applied for a third time, and in April 2019, she finally got the news she had been waiting for; she was accepted into the program. “My credit was so low when I got into the program, and now my credit score has gone up so much. Habitat helps you so much. I just keep telling people that it’s so worth it.”

With counseling and education, Regina was able to qualify for an affordable mortgage. Although she’s faced challenges due to the pandemic, she’s stayed focused on her goal while working on completing 350 partner hours.

And while Regina is excited about building her own home, she’s not the only one. Her granddaughter will move in with her, too. “My granddaughter is so excited to finally have her own room, and I am thankful that I will be able to leave something to my grandchildren. I want to inspire them. Seeing is believing, and this is just the beginning.”
