Senior Accounting Manager

Primary Team Leader:          VP of Finance

JOB SUMMARY:  The Finance Department is an integral function of the organization, working to further the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City through ethical and strategic financial planning and oversight.  The Senior Accounting Manager manages all accounting processes for the organization and works closely with the VP of Finance to ensure the integrity and accuracy of internal and external financial reporting.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Oversee daily accounting functions for all areas of the organization, including, but not limited to, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, construction in progress, homeowner mortgages, government and private grants, deposits, fixed assets, and payroll/benefits
  • Reconcile bank and general ledger accounts
  • Utilize restricted and designated grant funds in accordance with donor requirements and internal designations
  • Assist VP of Finance and other leadership team members with the annual budget process
  • Assist VP of Finance in coordinating the annual financial audit, including conducting inventory test counts, providing documentation, and responding to audit requests
  • Work with the VP of Finance to provide requested information to the tax preparer for the annual 990 tax return
  • Ensure the highest standards of integrity in financial reports, including compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements. Stay abreast of regulatory developments and industry best practices
  • Monitor and adhere to internal controls such as segregation of duties
  • Support all departments and provide accurate financial reports to ensure leadership has the information they need to manage their lines of business
  • Assist the VP of Finance with reporting to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
  • Work on project teams across departments to further the strategic goals of the organization
  • Maintain the chart of accounts
  • Prepare and submit sales and use tax filings
  • Protect confidentiality of organizational financial data and plans
  • Demonstrate commitment to the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City
  • Other duties as assigned by VP of Finance and/or President/CEO

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: 

  • Thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles
  • Familiarity with nonprofit accounting standards
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment, including working and communicating effectively with internal staff members, senior leadership professionals, external partners, audit and tax advisors, and vendors
  • Must be a self-initiator
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Must adhere to high ethical standards
  • Fully embrace working in a diverse environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting required
  • Five years minimum accounting experience required
  • QuickBooks or similar accounting system experience required
  • Retail accounting experience preferred
  • Restricted fund accounting experience preferred
  • Construction accounting experience a plus
  • Mortgage accounting experience a plus
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
