The “Tuesday/Thursday” Kansas regulars have been volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in Kansas City, Kansas for as long as Dave Lillard can remember. Dave is a retired engineer and member of the Village Presbyterian Church. He has been with the group since 1996 and acts as a liaison between the Habitat construction team and the Kansas Tuesday/Thursday volunteers.
Dave is one of the last of the regular volunteers from the original Kaw Valley Habitat for Humanity. He says back then the volunteers planned the jobs, ordered materials, and provided their own tools and equipment. Dave likes the current approach, the Habitat Site Supervisors now do all of that and everything is there when they need it.
There are about 25 volunteers on the Tuesday/Thursday roster with an average of 12-15 who show up regularly. Dave likes the mix, there are professionals like doctors and attorneys as well as people with blue collar backgrounds. He says break time can be especially fun with these rowdies; that’s when you can get free advice on almost anything. It isn’t always professional advice, but the price is right. Dave especially enjoys the fellowship and good humor of the group. Everybody gains when people come together and share their talents for the benefit of others.
The Tuesday/Thursday group is one of the most consistent groups for the construction operation and the group, consisting largely of members from the Village Presbyterian Church, has funded countless homes for families over the years. “They are very dedicated to the mission and are a real pleasure to work beside. Without folks like them we wouldn’t exist” states Steve Thompson, VP of Construction for Habitat Kansas City.
If you’re looking to get involved with a group of dedicated, worthwhile people doing great things in their community, you might consider the Habitat“Tuesday/Thursday” group. Oh, and be sure not to miss out on the break time “comedy hour.”
