Welcome home, Kayla!
“I can’t explain the feeling. All I can do is thank God!” – Kayla Borders, Habitat KC homeowner
Having just signed a new lease, Kayla Borders was stuck in an apartment with ever-increasing rent managed by a landlord that refused to make improvements or repairs. And to top it all off, her basement had just flooded for the second time.
“I lost everything in the flood, my daughter’s baby pictures, my children’s clothes. I was living paycheck to paycheck, and I knew I had to make a change.”
Searching for a new home for her family, Kayla learned about Habitat KC but, at first, thought it was too good to be true.
“I didn’t believe the program was real. Every outlet I turned to would reject me, and I was constantly being let down. Nothing was working out for me.”
Kayla says when she was accepted into the program, she knew God was telling her that this was her chance to build a better future for her children, and her hard work has not gone unnoticed. Her son, Victor, says he’s inspired by all that she’s accomplished and that by watching her, he’s learned more about personal finance and budgeting than he has ever been taught in school.
“No matter what the amount (of the mortgage), I am just grateful for Habitat for Humanity. I can’t explain the feeling. All I can do is thank God!”
