The Watson’s Family Story

Doris and Phillip have five children – three sons and two daughters in addition to 14 grandchildren. Their sons are grown and out on their own but their daughters are still in school. One of their daughters is looking forward to a pink room and being able to have a dog.

They have always wanted to be homeowners and when they heard about Habitat KC, they knew they had to apply for the program. Even though their credit wasn’t perfect and they knew there would be hard work ahead to complete 280 hours of sweat equity, they were excited to join the program with home ownership as the ultimate goal.

Doris grew up in Kansas City where her mother owned a home and raised seven children on her own. Doris and Phillip have been together since 1989 and have wanted a home of their own most of those 27 years. They look forward to stability, family gatherings, neighborhood togetherness, planting flowers, and having a back yard.

When asked what advice they would give new applicants to the HabitatKC program, they said, “Just apply – it’s well worth it. It is a lot of work, but in the end you will be a homeowner!”
