Habtamnesh’s Family Story

Seeking Space and Freedom
Meet Habtamnesh—Habitat of  KC Homeowner

Habtamnesh is one of our new partner families from Ethiopia. She is hard at work on her sweat equity hours and is looking forward to home ownership. She has been in the Kansas City area for over two years and rents a room in someone else’s house.  Some family members live nearby, but much of her family still lives in Ethiopia. Growing up with eight brothers and sisters, Habtamnesh had a large family that shared a tiny amount of space in their family home. She says she never has had a space of her own.

Another Habitat of KC homeowner brought her to Habitat to apply and she knows many friends back home who are Habitat for Humanity homeowners. She says the Habitat program makes her feel happy. She has enjoyed her sweat equity hours working on site and has learned to use a drill, saw, and how to paint. She credits our construction supervisors for teaching her a new skill set.

When asked how home ownership will change her life, Habtamnesh replied, “I will have freedom – I will sleep when I want, eat when I want, and come and go as I want. I will be happy.” She is looking forward to painting her house in colors she likes and choosing curtains and drapes to decorate her windows.

Habtamnesh is encouraging a friend from work to apply for home ownership at Habitat of Kansas City because it has been a great experience for her and she wants others to get involved and try.
